What will you remember about 4th grade?

The school year is rapidly coming to a close. We have had so many experiences this year from field trips to hands-on activities to interesting conversations to just plain fun. We've read great literature, had a couple of sessions with the author of one of our books, played some great games, and done some incredible projects. We've been underground (twice!), stood inside redwoods, explored science exhibits in San Francisco, and visited with Internment camp survivors. There are so many more . . . what would you like to say about your fourth grade school year? Think back over the year, pick a topic, and tell what you think about it. You can write about anything you'd like!

Be sure that you have good ideas, that you have support and evidence for what you are writing and that you develop your piece. Check the spelling and conventions, post the blog and see what comments you receive!

  1. If I had to choose the best part of fourth grade, I would pick our trip to Westminster Woods. I loved Westminster Woods because everyone there was having fun and working together. My class studied the redwood forests and the tide pools. Learning about these topics was very interesting. I was having so much fun I could barely tell we were learning, but Mr. LaMarr and the naturalists taught us about all of a redwood’s adaptations and about the amazing abundance of creatures at the tide pools. We had fun learning and everywhere else. We played wiffle ball in the field and laughed and until we couldn’t anymore. We hiked and found the beauty of the world around us. Everything about it was very exiting and everyone there made it fun. At the campfire we were singing and dancing and everybody was high-spirited. Westminster Woods just had a very fun atmosphere.

  2. Last Friday, we lit the room with our circuits and the lights were off, the drapes were all closed. Our class made the classroom looks as if the room was dark! I thought it was the best day I had in school. Back in the 1800’s, when it was dark, the businesses had to close down. We, Innovators had to generate light before the city gets dark. When I found how to make light out of the tiny light bulb with a piece of electric tape, one battery, folded alluvium foil, and a light bulb, I had to make a switch with it, so the people in the city won’t have to stand there the make the light bulb light. As time was coming by, the room was getting darker. The classroom was restless when Mr. La Marr explained what to do. When he let us work, we were excited. After all, it was great. Yet, we have never done this before, but it was super fun!

  3. West Minster Woods was an interesting week of my life. I played ga-ga ball, battled Mr. Lamarr on the cargo net,and also went on special hike along the river side. When we went on the hike, we took lots of photos on rocks, and Shaun even fell into the river! On the cargo net me and a few other people, battled Mr.Lamarr on the cargo net. We were thrown all around by Mr.Lamarr(not hard),and he shook the cargo net and we went up and down. When we attempted to jump on him,he'd throw us and make a pile of fourth graders. When I played ga-ga ball, I never won, but i still tried. I remember that Shaun won once. He had never played the game before too! In conclusion, I had fun.

  4. My favorite thing this year was going to Westminster Woods. We studied redwoods and tide pools. We sang and performed dances during our campfire ceremony on the first night. On the second day, we went to the tide pools. There were classmates sprawled all over the seaweed covered rocks taking pictures of the tide pool animals. We also went to the woods and observed the redwoods. On our last night we went on a night hike with our naturalists. Westminster Woods was a neat place to visit.

  5. I never knew gambling during the California Gold Rush could be so suspenseful, even when it’s pretend. What every team in the game Gold Rush has to do at the end is gamble. Your team has to bet what comes up first, a three or a king .My team chose a three. Others did others didn’t, but my team didn’t care we were only focusing on us. Some teams did 200, or 100, or 50, or even 5 gold nuggets to bet on. Though since my team was already in last place, we figured there’s nothing to lose, so my team went ALL IN! As the teams went by and the suspense rose, my team waited, and waited, and waited, until finally we were up. My team and I all knew that whoever cut the deck sealed are fate. The person are team picked was Ben, it was up to him and fate to get us in 1st or drop us down to 0, we all felt like we were going to explode. Then fate answered, Ben cut the deck and the 1st card that came up was a three! We all screamed with happiness and almost tackled Ben because we were in 1st place, until another team came along and went all in but one gold nugget and won. But so what, 2nd is still awesome. So, because of all that I’m going to take it easy when I gamble now so next time if I bet to much I don’t want to wet my pants.

  6. The best part of fourth grade was Westminster Woods. Westminster Woods was always hands-on stuff. When we first got there we got a little introduction. Then we went outside and got on our first hike. Then we went to eat something from the wild. It was this leaf that had a underside that was red and felt furry like a peach. It tasted sweet and like a tiny sour part when I ate it. It was really fun eating stuff. By the way my nickname was raccoon. After that we ate our sack lunch we played. Then we went on another hike which scary in a way… It was scary because we hiking pretty high. After that we went to have some dinner which DID NOT taste like any normal camp food. It tasted really good.
After that we all got prepared to go to sleep. I felt ready for the next day.

One of the days of Westminster Woods I went on hike with Mr. La Marr and the hike was a very special hike…

  7. I loved going to Westminister Woods this year. I really liked exploring Westminster Woods when we first got there. I went to see the Cargo Net and played on it for a while; it was really fun. That night we sang silly songs at campfire. The next day, at Armstrong Redwoods, I was fascinated by the huge redwoods at the site. A few of the redwoods we observed were more than 300 feet high. Our class also went to the tidepools. We saw crabs, anemones, sea stars, and chitons. Finally, on the last day, our naturalists took us on a night hike. We also went on hikes with Mr. La Marr (in the morning). They were awesome. During an especially interesting hike we found a snake. On another one we also found a crawdad. Overall, Westminster Woods was an amazing experience that fourth grade had in store for me!

  8. 4th grade was/ is the best school year I have ever had. Mr. La Marr, our teacher, is amazing which starts the whole fun. He always laughs, makes subjects interesting, and he make us (the students) laugh. He also took us on amazing field trips. The best field trip was WestMinster Woods. It was a 4 day 3 night trip. We had special hikes, really good food, games, and an amazing teacher! We also did two really fun games. Math Quest and Gulden Gulch. Math quest is a math game where you are in groups and you try to get get gold coins by moving up the board. You do that by homework. Gulden Gulch is about the gold rush. I learned a lot about the gold rush and a lot of new math skills in these games. What made this school year even better is my classmates. We are in a cohort so we stay in the same class. We are all friends and know each other well. If I had to pick the best things this school year it would be all of it.

  9. Science Night on Wednesday, May 13, 2015, was very fun and stressful. The stressful part about science night was the crowds and crowds of people coming over and doing your experiment. Plus, I probably said my explanation about 500 times, and probably all the explanations and ways I stated it were different in some way. Also, In the middle of science night, Ashley’s dad said something that I added in to my explanation after he said it, since it was true. The fun part, in my opinion, was when people that you knew walked up and did your experiment, like Shaun. I think that was the fun part because you can talk to him/her like you normally talk. I also think it was fun because you got to go to other stations, {except that I didn't!} Overall, I think science night was truly a hectic and fun experience.

  10. Westminster Woods was amazing. We got to see a raccoon climb into a trash can, peaceful creatures living in the tide pools, and magnificent 350 feet tall coast redwood towering over us. Some of us, who were up early enough, got to go on a morning hike. There were many activities during free time, and they were all fun to do. Some people actually found banana slugs and kissed or licked them. About half of the class went on a hike and found a snake! They saw some waterfalls and someone fell into the waterfall. The night hike was mysterious because it is dark and it is a mystery what is in front of me. We ate some candy, and when we chewed the candy with our mouth open it looks like there are sparks in my mouth. Westminster Woods was a very interesting field trip.

  11. Fourth grade was a fun and interesting time of my life. Our class played games to learn more about different subjects. We played a game called Math Quest to learn about math problems and charts and a game called Gold Rush to learn about how the Gold Rush impacted the world. Our class also played one game about deer and one game about bears. These games helped us learn more about science, improve our collaboration and unfold our competitive spirits. We also made graphs about these games to improve our math skills. Science Night on Wednesday was also fun. My Science Night group did static electricity. Doing my team's experiment and other team's experiment was exciting. A lot of people seemed to like our experiment, I can't blame them, it was fun. I also like our class field trips. My favorite field trip was Westminster Woods field trip. On this field trip we learned about nature. Our class went to tide pools to check out the underwater creatures and we also went to Armstrong Redwoods to explore more about redwood trees. We had to stay at the Westminster Woods camp for three days. On our free time I usually play on the cargo net or play Gaga ball. We also went on fun and tiring hikes. The campfire at Westminster Woods was great. We sang fun songs there. And even inside the cabins was a different kind of experience I will never forget. I get to know my class and bond with them. Me and my cabin group talked and talked and talked until we were talked out and it was time to go to bed. Over all, I think fourth grade is awesome.

  12. My favorite part of this school year is Westminster Woods. I like it because I like field trips and Westminster Woods is the best field trip. We got to go to go to Armstrong redwoods, Tidepooling at Salt Point State Park, and Dutch Bill Creek. It was a great experience because I was sad to go. In Armstrong Redwoods we hiked around and saw lots of redwoods. We got to eat lunch at an outdoor theater. At Dutch Bill Creek we checked for signs of if the river was healthy or not. I also watched Cooper do a Ph test of the river. Westminster Woods was awesome!

  13. 4th grade was an extremely fun and interesting year to me. A part of this vivid year that I enjoyed the most was when we went to Westminster Woods. So much of this trip was extremely enjoyable and half of it was due to the sheer funniness of the events. Of all these awesome experiences, my favorite, by far was when my trail group studied the health of the Dutch Bill Creek. I believe that it is my favorite activity because I got to help the environment by, like I said, assessing the health of the creek. What makes this really get high up on my list is that we saw macro-invertebrates that only live in the purest of waters and, believe it or not, salmon fry that, too, only thrive in pure waters. And more, these fry have not been seen in the last couple of years. This makes me feel involved in an important event. Another part of this is that I found the first one of those macro-invertebrates that like fresh water. Furthermore, I did a Ph test and the water was a seven (neutral) and a DO (dissolved oxygen) test and there was more than enough oxygen to go around! Now that is a healthy creek.

  14. My favorite part of my 4th grade experience was Westminster Woods. I thought that it was hilarious when I saw some of my friends kissing banana slugs. I’m just happy that I didn’t. I also enjoyed the cargo net. Unfortunately, I did not see Mr. LaMarr on it. The creek was fun too. I found a newt, but it escaped. On the bright side, I found many more bugs after. My cabin group was fun. They were most of my friends, which added to my excitement.

Westminster Woods wasn’t the only great fieldtrip. I liked going underground twice, in California Caverns and Old Sacramento, and seeing all the amazing experiments at the Explorio and Exploratorium. This was by far the best school year of my life.

  15. Throughout fourth grade my class had many fun, amazing, and silly experiences but I can only tell about one of those experiences and it is about the trip to Westminster Woods. On the first day at Westminster Woods, my class explored the camp grounds and we were pumped up with excitement. While we were exploring, one of the naturalists let us eat a plant called redwood sorrel which tasted like. It became one of my favorite foods. Then that night we went to a campfire and we danced and sang. On the second day I went with my assigned hiking group, Casey, Shaun, Matthew, Andy, Raymond, Ty, Clara, Sierra, Emanuela, Elissa, and Ivey, to the Armstrong Redwood State Park. My naturalist, Bramble, told my group about the redwoods there and I was captivated with the sight of the incredible redwoods. On the third day at Westminster Woods, my hiking group went the tide pools and saw many interesting sea creatures and on that night, my group went on a night hike which was really cool. On the last day there was the saddest day because I was going to leave the cabin where I stayed in with my cabin mates and where I stayed up to talk to them. I was really sad while my cabin was packing to leave but I was happy that I went to Westminster Woods.

  16. Fourth grade was a wonderful year, but the best part was Westminster Woods. My class learned a lot about coast redwoods and what creatures live in a redwood forest. It was fun learning about these forests. At Westminster Woods some people in my class played Ga-ga ball. Some of them came out of the Ga-ga ball pit with dust on their pants. We also went to the tide pools and saw many sea creatures. We saw hermit crabs, sea stars, chitons, sea anemones, sea slugs, and sculpins. Some people saw really big sculpins and little hermit crabs. We went on adventurous hikes which were fun and tiring. When we went to Armstrong Redwoods my group saw the biggest tree in the forest with an poison oak vine rapped around it. This was the best field trip and the best part ever.

  17. My favorite part of this year so far has been our trip to Westminster Woods. Going to Westminster Woods was a great experience because we got to learn about the tallest trees in the world and try new things, like kissing banana slugs. The thing I liked the most about Westminster Woods was being able to conquer my fear in our night hike. I also liked going to the tide pools and being able to see so many amazing creatures like chitons, sea stars, and sea anemones. Another thing I loved about fourth grade was Math Quest and Gold Rush. Even though my group got last place in both games a fact I liked about both Math Quest and Gold Rush was that they were both challenging and fun. All in all fourth grade has been the best school year yet and if I could stay in fourth grade for the rest of my life I WOULD.

I also liked the educational games we games we played like Math Quest and Gold Rush. Although all the subjects were fun, my favorites where math and science. Getting to know my cabin and hiking group was also fun.I got to learn what they like in what they dont like. I liked playing gaga-ball. It was super fun. On my tenth time, I got second place! I like going to the tide pools. There were the sea enemies, hermit crabs, porcelain crabs, limpets, sea slugs, and more.It was fun holding and touching the sea creatures.some of them or what and some of them were shy. 20. Fourth grade was a very great time in my life. One my favorite parts about it was Westminster Woods. At Westminster Woods my hiking group and I did a lot of fun things. Like going on really long and tiring hikes, but they were fun. Another fun thing about Westminster Woods was the tide pools. We got to see many cool tide pool creatures, such as sea anemones, hermit crabs, sea slugs, and many more. Another thing I liked was the cargo net. We all waited for Mr. LaMarr to get on and then we tackled him. But, he pushed us off and won every time.
Another thing I liked about fourth grade was having a teacher that has been doing this for years and still it seems like it's his first time. He's always is so excited and bright about learning and makes everything really fun. No wonder he's Teacher of the Year!
Our field trip to Coloma was probably my second favorite. To be able to see where Pearly Monroe and his family lived made reading the book so much more meaningful. I really enjoyed gold panning and climbing to the top of the hill to the James Marshall monument.
We had a lot of great experiences in the classroom as well. Growing plants, dissecting apples, creating light, building towers, amazing conversations, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. When we started fourth grade I had no idea on how the year would go. I wish I could stay in fourth grade forever, it was that much fun.

  22. My favorite part of the whole entire fourth grade year would have been the trip to Westminster Woods. It was one of our field trips to encourage us to learn about our environment and during this outing we focused on redwoods and tide pools. The first highlight of the trip was being able to see some amazing colossal redwood trees at the Armstrong Redwoods State Park. The second highlight was seeing some critters that live in the tide pools at Salt Point. Some of those critters were sea slugs, starfishes, hermit crabs, chitons, and even sea anemones. It was my very first time touching a sea anemone and starfish. The third highlight of the trip was going on the night hike. I felt challenged and also proud of myself for completing the hike. The fourth highlight of the trip was going on the rugged and rough cargo net with Mr. La Marr. After I got off the net I had some scrapes from the rope but it didn’t bother me at all because I had fun. The last highlight of the trip was going on one of Mr. La Marr’s special hikes. We went to a river were we had to avoid poison oak alongside it. When we were walking back we encountered a snake. A few people from our group got to actually hold it. Overall, the field trip to Westminster Woods was my favorite part of the fourth grade year. I am going to miss fourth grade and Mr. La Marr especially.

I liked Westminster Woods the best because I got to play on the cargo net with my teacher Mr. La Marr. I also got to go on all the special hikes with my teacher. On one of the special hikes I caught a snake! When I caught the snake, I was really happy. The snake was like a wet slinky all stretched out. One of my other favorite field trips was when our class went to California Caverns. I liked this trip so much because I got to go underground. When I was underground it was about 20 degrees cooler than when I was panning for gold above ground.

My second favorite part of my 2014-15 school year was Friday basketball/football. I liked the Friday sports so much because I got to be with my teacher for extra time. My favorite Friday football was when we played in the rain and all of us got soaked. I didn’t have a favorite Friday basketball because they were all so great. I wish Mr. La Marr played Friday sports all year long. If he did, I would play with him forever.

My last favorite part of the school year was the way my teacher taught me. He taught me in a way that was more fun than the way most teachers teach. Mr. La Marr lets us lead the discussion and sometimes our class goes 30-45 minutes over time. He makes our classes and the school year more fun, even though it's more work for him. Thanks Mr. La Marr.

  24. My favorite part of this AMAZING year was Westminster Woods. This trip gave everyone the chance to get to know everyone better. Even thought some people fell and were not happy at times, in the end everyone was happy. During the tide pools everyone got all wet, but nobody complained because they were having to much of a fun time to even complain. It was also fun find out more about all the fantastic creatures that we reports about. Going into the Redwood forest was nice. It was cool and i was surprised that I would ever get to see a redwood in my life. We had had a snack at an outdoor theater. I was also happy when Moose was picked to be with my group. Moose was cool and calm. I had so much fun with him! I also liked the names. Mine was Raven. I thought it was cool and fit the area we were in. I was sad when we had to leave. I know someday i will come back and have as much fun as i did the first time. When i got back to school and was talking about it so much. At that very moment i remembered who got us that trip. I give a big thanks Mr. La Marr for booking this trip. Without you, this trip wouldn't have even happend. Thanks so much Mr. La Marr!

  25. My favorite and the most exiting part about fourth grade was Westminster Woods. I learned about all kinds of things. For almost the entire day my hiking group and I did a hike, and we were surrounded by miraculous redwoods. They are the tallest trees in the world. I took notes in our note books about the forest. We also learned about stupendous tide pools. There were so many superb animals. I saw a lot of sea stars. I did a report on them. My class had lots of free time. But, free time would not be a great time without Mr. La Marr.

Mr. La Marr has been the best teacher I've ever had. He was awesome on the cargo net. The whole entire class tried to take him down, but we couldn't. He was so hilarious. Playing Friday football and Friday basketball. It was a great feeling when I scored a touchdown in football or a basket in basketball. When I tried to tackle Mr. La Marr in football he grabbed me and started spinning me around. He explained things so well and thoroughly when I did not understand. No wonder he was the Teacher of the year! Lots of things were very enjoyable about fourth grade but Mr. La Marr was the best part. I will miss him sooooo much. :(

My favorite part about Westminster woods was the trip to the tide pools because I got to see some sea life that I never new existed. Also I got to be the vise president of The United States of Hermit crania. I will miss Mr. La Marr a lot :(. I had fun this year :).

  27. One of the most memorable time in my fourth grade was the field trip to the California Museum. At the California Museum, we saw a replica of a Japanese internment camp. Seeing the replica of an internment camp was significant to me because my friend’s grandmother was sent to an internment camp during WWII when she was a little girl. After the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, many Japanese-Americans were sent against their will to the internment camps across the country by the United States government. At the museum, ex-internees gave us descriptions of what their life was like at the internment camps. The ex-internees shared with us about the games that they played to pass the time. They also told us that they made furniture out of leftover wooden crates because they had to leave most of their possessions behind. Not only that, we learned that there was no privacy in restrooms. Lines at mess halls were long because the camps were set up so hastily that there weren’t enough facilities to accommodate such large numbers of internees. Talking to ex-internees and seeing the replica of a camp allowed me to truly understand what life was like for my friend’s grandmother as a young girl imprisoned with no fault of her own. There were countless fond moments and great learning experiences this year, but I will always be glad that we had the field trip to the California Museum.

    1. I am really glad that you appreciated the trip to the California Museum, Ashley. I think it's a great trip to learn about our nation's past and learn what not to do in the future.

  28. My favorite part of 4th grade was the games such as Gold Rush in Golden Gulch. Math Quest was amazing because we learned math strategies that helped me so much on homework. My team, Pie Graph, would have won on the board if the cheaty death of chartipiller card wasn't there. Everybody won (thanks to Nate's observation) except for Danwei, Julia, Hayden, and Cooper's team and the Dividers. Math Quest was super fun because of the fate cards, too. Most of the fate cards were funny, except Mr. La Marr said people cheat on the Careless Carousel fate card so he hid it, something was suspicious to me.

The Gold Rush in Golden Gulch game was fun, too. My team the Gold Gods was real estate agents and we would have been second if we hadn't bet king in the gambling hall. Emanuela never did fate cards so that gave me, Nimi, and Cooper more cards. It sucked that each team got 6 fate cards, but they were mostly good for us. If I did the math correctly the Calminers and the Golden Eggs got last and everyone else got first(sorry Golden Eggs I couldn't find a way to get you to first place.).

  29. I liked going to Westminster Woods. It was my favorite field trip it 4th grade. I liked to play on the Cargo Net, field, and watching people play Gaga Ball. I also liked to hike with my hiking group and learn a lot of new things about nature. I loved to eat the redwood sorrel. It tasted a lot like green apple. I also liked the tide pools too. Picking up the hermit crabs was fun and they tickled my hand. It was fun by the camp fire singing songs too. We sang songs about banana slugs. The food also tasted amazing. I always get seconds. There was also many other things that was really fun at Westminster Woods. This was the best field trip ever!

  30. I’m sorry, but this blog was late by one day.
    End of School Blog

What I mostly liked about school is the field trip to Safteyville. It was a very fun Spanish field trip. When our car ride went there, we were excited and wondering while we were going there. When we got there, we had seen a map (el mapa) before we went inside Safteyville. We did the scavenger hunt at Safteyville when we got inside. After, we went to Ashton Park for lunch. Lots of the students in Mr. La Marr’s class played baseball with him. Then we drove in a very big circle to go get my lunchbag at Ashton Park and then drive to school a little bit after noon.
Again, I had a great time during this field trip.

  31. An exciting part of fourth grade was when I went to Del Norte. This was probably the most fun part of fourth grade because I got to play in the pool with Oscar and got to play basketball, football, and baseball with Mr. Lamarr. I was in the pool for awhile, and when I was, I was torpedoing with Oscar. There were bubbles in the pool, which felt like a massage when I put my foot on top of the blower. That was the reason why this trip was so very fun.
