The Loss of Baby Rose

We have just completed the reading of chapter 7 in The Adventures of Pearley Monroe. The family has experienced the loss of baby Rose. The story is true about baby Rose, and the events happened as told by Marci Seither.

Your job is to create a blog post about that event. You may write about all of the following or focus on one piece of the following:

  • As a reader, what did you think about the loss of the baby? What was its impact on you?

  • How do you think the event will impact Pearley and his family?

  • What did you think about the way the story of the baby's death was told? Examine the author's writing style and tell your opinion of how you learned, from the author, of the event.

Be sure that you not only give your opinions, but also have reasons to support your opinions. Try to develop unique ideas that will give the reader something to think about. Check your spelling and conventions before you post your piece. If you choose to write about more than one of the topics, each topic needs to be its own small paragraph.

As always, please comment away on each other's posts.

  2. The chapter good by rose was sad and brought no delight to my face. Mama was the most sad about this situation since she was the mother of the child (Rose). This chapter was sad, but so detailed and interesting.

    2. In the beginning of chapter 6 mama got hurt and it was sad because Rose died just because it was early to be born.I was sad because I was so into the book with having a fifth child .The book is still interesting and sad.I was exited when Prealey's mom was going to have a baby.

      Everyone was disappointed especially Cordelia.

    1. Sometimes when we are sad about something we blame others for our pain..but it wasn't the miners fault. I hope Pearley learns to forgive them because bitterness is something that Pa knows is a big burden that we don't want to hang onto.

  5. The impact Rose's death had on me as a reader was I felt sorrow. I was really exited when mama was having a baby. It was such a shock when she died. I can't imagine one of my siblings dying the day after they were born.

In my opinion, the impact Rose's death will have on Pearley and his family will be sadness and disappointment, especially for Cordelia because she wanted a sister. I think Pearley and his family will be angry at the miners for causing the explosion.

I think Marci Seither told the story great! The story started out very exiting with the explosion, but then slowly got calmer and eventually turned out to be very sad when Rose died. The author gave a lot of details and facts which helped me imagine I was there. Again, I loved the way Marci told the story. It was very ethical.

  7. I think that the chapter "Good-bye Rose" was a great chapter. It was really detailed about what was going on with the Monroe family after Rose passed away. The way Rose died was not a great way to die, but it was not totally torture. I think it was sad the way Rose died. For Pearley it must have been torture for him and his family. In the book, on the morning of the Rose's funeral, Pearley was so sad and angry that Rose died. It must have been so hard for the Monroe family to go through that.

  8. Rose dying is a sad part of the story. I feel sorry for rose for dying so early. What's surprising to me is that she dyed so early she didn't even live the night.

I think Cordelia would be sad because she really wanted a baby sister. Mama would also be sad because she went through all this pain ,and the baby just dies.

The story was told perfectly. Marci Seither told the story gradually getting more chaotic and then when Cordelia yells ''Mama, Mama" it gradually got calmer and calmer. I liked the way she told the story.

    1. Good examination of how the story was written Nithin!

    2. Hi Nithin,
Pearley had to be brave and overcome his fear to race ahead of the wagon to tell Miss Nancy about Mama.

If you go to an old cemetery you will notice that there were a lot of babies that didn't live very long because of sickness or accidents. Pioneer life was very hard.

  9. The loss of baby Rose shocked me. I felt happy when baby Rose came into the world but then she dies. It all happened so quickly. I felt sad and very fearful that maybe something like that could happen to my siblings. I was also little disappointed because I wanted to see who Rose would become.

Pearley was so mad at the miners for causing the explosion and feels terrible for losing his baby sister. Pearley’s family felt so sad and disappointed especially mama because that was her baby that just died. Cordelia will feel alone without Rose because she really wanted a sister. It will be hard for the family and they will never get over the loss. But I think they will try hard to move on with their lives.

I think that Marci Seither’s book was amazing even though Rose’s death occurred in the seventh chapter. Marci Seither gets really detailed when describing Rose’s death. She really drags me into the book. I love reading The Adventures of Pearley Monroe. In conclusion I think that Marci Seither wrote a great book.

    2. Hi Sierra,
I am so glad you are enjoying reading "The Adventures off Pearley Monroe". Losing Rose was a very sad chapter to write, but the sadness of losing a child was common for pioneer and slave families. Mining accidents were also common. Even when something sad happens we have to decide if we are going to hang onto bitterness, or move forward.

    2. Hi Nimi, Danwei and Elisa,
One of the things I noticed when I was doing research and went to old pioneer cemeteries was that the head stones often stated the day the person was born and how many years, months and days they lived. Pioneer life was hard and they understood that every single day was important. Sometimes that is a good reminder to me..to make everyday count.

  16. When I read chapter 6 I was filled with happiness in my head that Mama gave birth to a child thinking there might be another character though out the whole book. Then when I read that Rose died I was sad.

I think the Monroe-Gooch family feels depressed because they were so looking forward to having another baby and Cordeila was finally get a sister. Pearley was mad at the miners and blame them for making Rose come into the world too early.

I liked how Marci Seither described how Rose died and how the Monroe-Gooch family felt after this event happened, I thought it was excellent and detailed.

  18. The chapter good bye Rose is very sad .I think by heart I would not want to be Rose's parents . But the bright spot in all of the tragic parts, cute Cordelia got to name Rose . I understand the level of anger and sadness because I would have been as mad as Pearly,if i was in Pearlie's shoes I would cry and shout if that was my sister , Even if i knew her just for a couple hours . I cant see myself losing my sister or anyone that is a family member that i am super close to . So I consider myself lucky that i am not in the Monroe Gooch family

  20. I think that Rose’s death will be hard on the family. I had a brother who fell out of a two story window and I thought he was dead! (Luckily he wasn’t.) Cordelia even cried, (well, everyone cried) and she placed “a fresh rosebud” on Rose’s grave when the prayers were over.

  21. It doesn't really affect me much. The baby only appears in the book for only a few pages and doesn't have any attachment to the main character. If the loss happens to me, I will feel sad too. Everybody experience a loss at some time in their lives.

In Pearle's mind it is the explosion in the mine that caused the death of Rose. They will remember it as a devastating experience from the Gold Bug Mine. They will probably avoid going there.

The author described the death of Rose was like a bumpy ride. She provided little hope about Rose. She made me guessed what will happen in the next chapter. It made me more excited reading this book.

  22. I think that Pearley and his family felt sad when rose died.
How would you feel if your baby died? Pearleys family felt upset too.
Pearley was very mad at the miners. They were the ones that made
Duke rear up and make the wagon hit mama. They will remember
this the rest of their lives.

  23. The loss of baby Rose was very surprising to me. I never thought one of the kids would die. I was sad for the family and hope that they aren't too sad for long. I think this tragedy will bring the family closer together.

I think Pearley and his family will be sad for a long time. The Monroe family should be very grateful that Mama survived the accident. Life was very dangerous for people in the 1880's. I think Cordelia will be the most effected by this occasion because she was praying for a baby sister.

Marci Seither writes really exciting chapters. I like that the chapters start very calm and the they move up to the action and then end with an unanswered question.

  24. I think it is great how Marci Seither wrote the book. She made not to sad to make me cry but not happy that I was laughing. Marci's book is great.

When Rose died it didn't have that big of an impact on me because we barley knew Rose, she was only in the book for a couple of pages. She did have an impact because she was a baby who was under 24 ours old. Just a baby dieing is sad but a baby who is less than 24 our old is even sadder.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Although the loss of baby rose was sad(it actually almost made me cry, and I don't cry), you have to acknowledge the fact that back then it was relatively common for babies to not survive, and remember that Rose was born early. Also, the only reason I did feel like crying was because it's just sort of harsh for a baby to die in less than twenty-four hours.

I think that after the funeral, the Gooch-Monroe family will just move on. Even though that Rose didn't live even twenty-four hours, they will just sort of move on and things will sort of even out.

I like how Marci decided to write the book. First, I like how she sort of lets the news out in a subtle manner. Second, I think it was a good decision to just go out and write it. I mean, if she had left it out of the book completely, she would be rewriting(wow a spelling prefix :0 )history.

  27. When I read chapter 6 I felt very sad for the Monroe–Gooch family. When I heard Mama was going to have a baby I really wondered what Rose’s personality would be like. If something like that happened to my sister I would be very sad and unhappy. Baby Rose died so quickly.

Pearley and his family were very sad about Baby Rose’s death. Pearley was very upset. He was mad at the miners for causing the explosion. He feels horrible losing his new baby sister. Mama was really disappointed because Rose was her baby. Cordelia was probably sad because this was her chance to have a baby sister. It will be hard for them to get over their loss of Baby Rose.

I think Marci Seither did a great job telling the story of Rose. It is what truly happened. She is a great writer. She puts so much detail into her book. Again I really love reading The Adventures of Pearley Monroe.

  28. The death of Baby Rose made a little bit of impact on me because a death of a baby is sad but she was only mentioned in the book for small bits of pages.

I think it made a big impact on Pearly and the Monroe-Gooch Family. Pearly was so angry that he bolted outside and blindly ran and crashed into a haystack, whe Pearly sat up next to Pa he cried.

Marci Seither wrote the death of Baby in the way the last year’s 4th RL students way. The last year’s 4TH RL class was very good.

  29. Marcy’s work helped me love history. The thing I really liked was the way she ended each chapter, how she basically gave me an unanswered question at the end of each chapter. Then at the beginning the other chapter my unanswered question was answered. I felt like every chapter was a new book. The only thing I didn’t like was the drama excitement level. On a scale of 1-10, (1= to little 10= to much) it would probably be a 4 (or on a scale of 1-100 it would be a 43[or at least until chapter 8]). To sooth your worries, it was an amazing book (or at least until chapter 8).
Marcy told the death of baby Rose almost perfectly, the only thing missing from that was excitement. Like I said earlier, the scaled number would be a 4 or 43.

  30. I was shocked at the loss of baby Rose, once I knew she was going to enter the world I really wanted to see who she became.

Pearly was really mad at the miners for causing the explosion at the Gold Bug Mine. The whole family felt really bad for the loss of Rose.

Marci has done a grate job on the book even though Rose's death occurred in chapter 7. I've enjoyed reading Marci 's book so far. I think its a really good book.

  31. Pearley Monroe
Rose’s death was tragic and had a big impact on the whole Monroe Gooch family. It had a bigger impact on Pearley because Rose was already family, even if she was family for only a couple of hours, she was and will always be his sister. In the book, on page 38, chapter 6, Rose opens her eyes and the family thinks how perfect she is, but “everyone knew in their hearts what they couldn’t say with their mouths.” Right now, as I type this, I feel Pearley’s sadness. Even though it has never happened to me, I still feel his depression and sadness and anger. I am serious, I am not lying. Pearley would probably have loved to have a sister that didn’t think they were the boss [meaning Cordelia]. I think Pearley loved Rose, even though she passed on the next day, for all the ways she could have been a better sister.

  32. I am really sad because in the story baby Rose only survived less than a day. From this story, It impacted me to be safe because Pearley’s mom got hit by the wagon, and fell. This caused baby Rose to die.

Pearley’s family was shocked after Ol’ Duke reared up and the wagon hit Mama. Pearley doesn’t like the miners, because the explosion caused Ol’ Duke to rear up and hit Mama.

The way Marci Seither wrote The Adventure’s of Pearley Monroe was great because she added a lot of action that happened to Rose, like Rose was about to die and other things. The writing style was also good because the author explained how Mama got hit by the wagon in one sentence. I love this book.

  33. As a reader, I was truly sad when Rose died. I had gotten attached to her, but not as much as I am to Pearley. Still, it was very sad and it filled me with sorrow.

Everybody in the Monroe family must have felt a big impact from Rose's death. It especially had a big impact on Cordelia because she has wanted a sister for a long time. Cordelia even choked on her own words as she named the newborn ''Rose''. Pearley was sad as well as angry. He thought that the miners ''caused the explosion at Gold Bug Mine,'' resulting in Rose's premature birth and then her death. Pa was sad and when he spoke his voice cracked with grief. Rose's death meant a lot to the Monroe family.

The story of Rose's death was told in a skillful way. That part of the story was very detailed, factual, and meaningful. I had absolutely no trouble in understanding the book. Its meaning was very clear. I got lots of facts out of those small but important details. Marci also hinted at Rose's death. For example, Pa says Rose was born too soon and her lungs hadn't fully developed yet. Also, Rose struggled to breathe. In my opinion, Marci handles chapters 6-7 involving Rose's death with great care.

  34. Rose's death was one of the saddest parts of the story for me. It impacted me by making me reflect on how precious life is. Being a twin, many of my twin friends were born very small. Unlike Rose, they were born at a hospital where there were doctors and nurses to help them survive being born small. I wonder if Rose was born at a hospital would she have survived?

  35. This is so sad!!!
When I read this chapter I felt horrible because I have big feelings for when in a book a person dies or if anyone dies (but not the “bad guys”).I think this will effect Pearly and his family for the rest of their lives. Also, it will effect Cordelia the most because she wanted a baby sister so badly but she didn’t even have her for a day. If this happened to me I would have a big meltdown until there are no tears left.

  36. The impact of Rose dying had on me was sadness and sorrow. She was premature so I wasn’t surprised she was going to die but it still struck me when she died. It affected me because I really didn’t want her to die because she was very little and I am always sad when a baby dies.

I really like the way this chapter was written. I liked that it wasn’t too gentle nor harsh. It wasn’t too gentle because Pa built a coffin for his own child and it wasn’t too harsh because it wasn’t dramatic. I also liked the Monroe family’s accent. It’s jist really cool.

I think Rose dying will impact the family big time. I think it will affect the family because she was a good baby and had disabilities with her breathing. It impacted the most on Cordelia because she wanted a sister very badly. She even choked on her words when she named Rose.
I really think Marci Siether should write another book like Pearley Monroe because I really like reading this book and would enjoy if she wrote another book.

  37. I think the chapter “Good-bye Rose” was sad for many reasons. First, Cordelia wanted a baby sister because she already had three brothers. She got a baby sister, Rose, but then Rose died before she even lived a day. In my opinion, having a sister and losing her is more sad than not even having a sister at all. Second, I think the Monroe-Gooch family will have many sad moments in the next month or so. After a while, it won’t be as sad as it was in the first month. Lastly, if Mama would have been farther away from the wagon then she was, she wouldn’t have been hurt. If she wasn’t hurt then the baby wouldn’t have been born early. The impact of baby Rose dying made me feel a little more sorry for the Monroe-Gooch family.

I think the author Marci Seither, has a unique writing style. She is retelling a real story that actually happened, with a few twists. I like the way Marci Seither writes with high intensity.

  38. The Adventures of Pearly Monroe CHP7,the loss of baby rose

    Dear Marci,

I do not have any siblings, but I think that if I lost a sibling I would feel pretty sad.
When I read chapter 7 I felt sorry that baby Rose died. When young siblings are born too soon they're called premature babies and sometimes die in a few days. I know of a premature baby that survived until my birthdate. Her name was Laurie and she was my daddy's older sister who was born 3 months too early.

I think that Pearly and his family are sorrowful because baby Rose died.
Cordelia gets to name two things: the premature baby Rose and a newborn cat named Whiskers. Everybody inside the house was heartbroken because baby Rose died. The author wrote about how they all cried and were keening.

I think that if you did not put chapter 7 in,it would be hard to tell if life is hard or not. I also like the rest of the book except the sad parts, those make me cry. "Marci, you are a great writer."

  39. When I read chapter 7, “Good Bye Rose”, I was very sad to find out that Rose, the baby, had died. It wasn’t her fault that she was born too early. And I must admit that I was a little bit angry at the miners myself, like Pearley. I didn’t see this coming the way it came. If I wanted a little sister, like Cordelia did, I would be extremely disappointed if I actually got one and it didn’t even survive over the night it was born. It makes me think of my uncle who died on Halloween.
