Thank you Marci Seither!

We were so lucky to have been given a copy of The Adventures of Pearley Monroe by Marci Seither. We were also lucky to be a part of the process of publishing such a great book. We thank Marci for her generosity in gifting each student a book!

Fourth graders: this is the place where you can express your sincere thanks to Marci! Let her know just how much you appreciated receiving the book. You might consider answering:

Why are you glad you have a copy of the book and what does it mean to you knowing you helped in shaping the book a little?

Post your thank you here and feel free to comment on what others have said.

  1. I was so excited to see the video of you getting your books. I read everybody's comments when we were working on the story. There were some that helped me make changes and some that helped make a decision about the chapter with the baby. I made sure that the baby was NOT in pain or struggling to breath but peaceful. I also waited until the next morning to let readers know that the baby was gone..BUT because of the great insight I also changed something else in the book. I originally had Charles Stone not make it out of the burning building, but I felt like having him survive and be accepted into the community would be a much better ending. I imagined what you would say and it helped me a lot.

I loved how much concern you had for Chen Ho. It is not an easy thing to talk about how people treat others based on their appearance or where they are from. Your class is very sensitive to what is right and fair. I love that about you! It gives me hope that the kindness of human nature is stronger than bitterness.

My great-grandmother's grandfather was in the civil war..he lost his arm due to a bullet wound…just like Lefty Miller! Sometimes when you see things or hear something interesting you might want to write them down..who know, someday they might end up in a book that you write!

  2. Hi Marci-

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment here and let my fourth graders know how you used their feedback. It is so great to have been a part of The Adventures of Pearley Monroe. This was a once in a career opportunity, and I am honored to have my class provide you with feedback. It's tremendous to know that you used what they said and that they shaped parts of the book.

We have been away at environmental education camp; in fact, we spent all of last week there. Thus, I have not officially launched this prompt for the class yet; they don't know it's here, actually! However, they should begin posting their thoughts to you this week, so you should be able to get some nice thank you's this week.

Thank you again for allowing us to be part of The Adventures of Pearley Monroe. We are so grateful to be given a signed copy of the book.

Take care and I'll talk with you soon-

I hope you had a great time at camp! Did you get to touch a banana slug? They are so weird looking!
Anyway, I was super excited about being able to send the class their own books. I hope this inspires you to do something beyond what your thought you could ever do ~ That is what "The Adventures of Pearley Monroe" is…something I never thought I could do, but I did it anyway. 2. I agree. It is great to be part of the Adventures of Pearly Monroe. Thank you for reading the first twelve chapters of the book in class. I'm almost positive everyone in my class liked it. It was fun how you stopped after every chapter so the cliffhanger would not be solved.

  3. Dear Mrs. Seither,

Thank you very much for the signed copy of your book, "The Adventures of Pearley Monroe". I have never owned a book that has been signed by the author! I finished reading it today and I really liked the book. I like that you ended each chapter with a cliffhanger because it made me want to continue reading! My favorite climax was when Pearley and Cordelia were being chased by a black bear while picking blueberries because it was shocking and exciting. I'm glad the bear was distracted by their lunch tin and berry bucket so the kids could escape!

This was one of the best books I've ever read because it was filled with action. I was never bored while reading this book. I also thought it was interesting to learn about a kid who lived in Coloma in the 1880's. My class went to Coloma on a field trip so I could imagine where Pearley lived.

    Sincerely,
    William Ruggles

  6. Dear Marci Seither,

Thank you so much for all these books! I thought it was really cool that each book had its own comment. This entire process of this, starting from reading the rough draft in class, has been an incredible experience for me. Very few people have the chance to give feedback to an excellent author who's writing a book. The Adventures of Pearley Monroe is, in fact, my favorite book ever made! It is extremely well done, detailed, and sets an off the chart standard for other authors. Thank you so much for putting all the time and effort into getting us these awesome books!

Thank you for all of the books. It must have taken a long time to write slightly different comments in every book. I am happy that I could help you in the process of creating your book.
I have finished reading the book. It kept me reading. I am glad that Pearly and Cordelia made it back home somewhat safely. I was greatly worried about Charles Stone. I am glad that he survived the burning building. I loved the ending when Pearly grew up and went to James Marshall’s funeral after finding the letter from Ms. Nancy. I will recommend this book to anyone who will listen.
I loved the last paragraph and finally know what your quote meant and you are right life is full of adventure!!!

I was so touched When I found out my review was in the acknowledgements. I literally cried because I was so happy to receive my own copy of the book. I am currently at chapter seven. I'm not very far, but I have been savoring every last word. I like how the chapter about Rose isn't quite as sad anymore. I am also touched by how everyone's book has their very own message from you, our name, and your signature. If I could and had to, I would pay $1,000,000,000 for a copy of this book. his was a great surprise, and I'll never forget my excitement at the sight of the books. When I was going through all the museums and doing research I saw pictures of the real family and wanted to include them, such as Miss Nancy and Peter's wedding picture, and the photo of the Monroe family. I realized that there were a lot of great photos that could also be included and would help readers see what the people looked like during the 1880's.

I am not sure if you have ever gone blackberry picking, but our family goes every year and then we make blackberry cobblers and jam..just like they were going to do in the book. One day when we were picking berries we heard a rustle deep in the thicket..I began to tell our kids to back up and move toward the car when all of a sudden two big deer jumped out of the bushes and ran off! It scared us so much we couldn't even scream…and that is how I think Pearley and Cordellia must have felt in the chapter you are reading!

    1. Hi Miles, The chapter about Rose was one that was hard for me to write. My daughter has raised little lambs that the mom can't take care of. She has to give them bottles just like a baby! Sometimes they make it and sometimes they don't but Amy says that she feels better knowing that they were loved for a little while. That was how I felt about Rose. I wanted to let the family and the readers at least see her for a moment. The part about Pearley's mom having a baby that didn't live very long was true.

It is so fun to see a whole classroom of students get excited about books! I am glad it helped you learn about history! I have written hundreds of articles and just finished a book for parents whose kids are growing up, but this is the only book I have written for middle schoolers. I am not sure if I will be writing another story like this but you never know…my adventure isn't over either :~)

    1. Hi Lucas,
Sometimes the worst part of reading a good book is when it ends! I hope you love the ending as much as the beginning. Adventure is something that a lot of people miss out on because they are busy with gadgets and electronics ~ which are not always bad ~ but always make sure you look for real adventure and you will always have something to write about! Thanks so much for your comments.

  38. Thank you so much Mrs. Seither! I love the time you spent on giving us a personal note, each one different. I thank you so much for sending these books. It truly makes me happy to see how grateful you are to see us give you opinions like that of the targeted audience. Thank you so much!

  39. Hi Michael A.
The smartest thing a writer can do is to think about who their target audience is. I heard about this story and loved it. But I didn't want to just write it from Miss Nancy's point of view. I wanted to write it for younger readers who would be able to learn about California history in a fresh way. Since I have 4 boys I wanted to make sure that it was a book they would want to read so I wrote it from Pearley's point of view. You have been a great help to me and an encouragement to those who helped make this book a reality! Thank you so much.

  41. Thank you Marci Siether for the book! I love the book and what you did with chapter 12. At first I thought Pearly Monroe was a girl before I read the book, but now that I read the book I realize that Pearly is a boy. I like the subject of your book, because I like non-fiction books. I also like how you matched the text with the pictures that did not even come from those pictures. My favorite character is Pearly Monroe. I loved it when I found the book on my desk after getting back from music. I was shocked and surprised when I got the book.

  42. I can tell The Adventures of Pearley Monroe is a great book. The part I liked the most so far is the tale of Lefty Miller. I liked the tail of Lefty Miller because he brings adventure to the story. This book is full of excitement and fun loving characters like Pearley and his friends. Another part of this story that I like when the raccoon stole Mrs. Barnsworth's bracelet because of the suspense, mystery, and the ridiculous truth about the thief. I can’t wait to read the rest of this wonderful book. If I could rate this book on a scale of one to one-hundred stars I would rate it 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars!
